Spring Cleaning Simplified

The beginning of daylight savings time also signals the beginning of spring. Meaning SPRING CLEANING!!!

Yes, we know, most spring-cleaning lists are long and daunting. Therefore, we’re breaking ours up into manageable pieces by areas of your home. That way you can tackle one every week, over the next 3 weeks.

Grab your cleaning supplies and let’s get going!

Week 1 – Kitchen

Declutter your pantry

Review the expiration dates on everything. If in doubt, throw it out! Make sure you review your spices. If you buy them in bulk or put them in cute containers and now aren’t sure how old they are, rub a pinch between your fingers and smell. If it you can barely smell it, toss it.

Clean under and behind the fridge

There are loads of debris under there! Check the coil in the back and vacuum all of the dust bunnies that have accumulated there.

Clean out your fridge and freezer

Remove everything. Wipe it down the shelves, the doors, the drawers and bins. Review all of your condiments and bottled products, toss what’s expired. Do the same with your freezer. Plus, remove your ice maker, dump all of the ice out in the sink. Run the ice through the disposal (to in turn clean that too!). Wipe down the ice maker and return to the freezer. Check your water filter to see if it’s expired also.

Empty, clean and organize drawers

This is also a great time to edit what you have, particularly in your junk drawer (because it is mostly junk!). Wipe down the insides of the drawers, vacuum if there is debris on the bottom.

Empty, clean and organize cabinets

Wipe it all down, and use this opportunity to cull stuff that you haven't used in the past year (trust me, you won't miss it!).

Clean exhaust fan / grease trap

You should actually do this every couple of months, but if you haven’t now is the time. Remove the hood grease filter from your hood and soak it in water with dishwashing liquid for 15 minutes.

Clean above fridge and above cabinets

If you haven’t been cleaning your hood filter, you will have loads of grease deposited on top of your cabinets and fridge. Wipe down with dishsoap diluted in water.

Edit, edit edit

How many dish towels, napkins, placemats do you need? Edit your plastic storage containers too and toss anything that doesn’t have a top.

And that’s it, your kitchen is done!

Next week we’ll tackle bedrooms and bathrooms.

Happy cleaning!
